Bodrum Castle from Bodrum Cruise Port
The Knights' fortress above the harbour — Bodrum's essential sight and home to one of the world's great underwater archaeology museums.
Distance
About 800 m–1 km / 10–15 min on foot
Travel time
10–15 minutes walking
Time needed
Allow 2–2.5 hours including walk and visit
Bodrum Castle dominates the waterfront and is within easy walking distance of most cruise berths. Built by the Knights of St John in the 15th century on the site of the Mausoleum quarries, it now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology — the headline visit on almost every Bodrum port day.
From the cruise terminal, follow the waterfront promenade east toward the castle walls — a flat, scenic walk of roughly 10–15 minutes. Alternatively, cut through the whitewashed Old Town lanes for shade and boutique shops, emerging at the castle gate from the landward side.
Allow 1.5–2 hours inside the castle complex. Exhibits include the Uluburun Bronze Age shipwreck, classical amphoras recovered from Aegean seabeds, and the Glass Wreck Hall. Courtyards offer views across the marina and across to the Greek islands on clear days.
Tickets are sold at the main entrance. Midday queues can form on busy cruise days — arrive early or join an organised tour with pre-arranged entry. Wear comfortable shoes; the castle has steps, uneven stones and limited shade.
